SAWDIS Holiday Alert 2011/2012

24 die on Western Cape roads

At least 24 people died on the Western Cape’s roads this past long weekend.

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said, “Those drivers are really driving to do business. Fatigue is taking its roll. We would like to urge our taxi drivers and public operators to be more cautious.”

Nearly half of the deaths were recorded on the N1 in the Karoo.

Beaufort West Traffic Chief Willie van Rooi said they face a number of challenges.

“We’ve seen it in the Karoo, that overloading is a serious problem for us. People overload the trailers with their luggage. In the hot sun, the tyres burst and then they cannot control the vehicle on the road,” he said.

200 000 hit Durban's beaches

EThekwini officials say around 200 000 holidaymakers flocked to the city's beaches over the past long weekend.

The municipality's Christo Swart says the weekend was relatively incident free, with beach-goers from Umdloti to Amanzimtoti cooperating with law enforcement officials.

Swart says the 300 officers that have been deployed to the beachfront helped to control the crowd.

Swart says they didn't have to deal with large numbers of children getting lost or separated from their parents.

"I am pleased to report that even this morning we had no children in our facilities, and we just want to thank all our patrons to our beaches. Taking into account the good weekend that we had and the cooperation that we received from all who came down to the beaches over this past weekend, we hope and anticipate to have the same over this coming weekend - which is a four-day long weekend."
