MOSSEL BAY NEWS - An injured employee recently had to be airlifted from the PetroSA ORCA Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) facility in the dark of night. The Orca is 126km offshore from Mossel Bay.
On Tuesday, 29 November, Indwe Operations were contacted to evacuate a patient who was strapped to a stretcher.
Conditions were dismal with a particularly dark night with no horizon visible, and several fog patches at both the rig and George Heliport. The flight required particular skill from the pilots as they had to rely heavily on the helicopter’s instruments for navigation.
Back on land the helicopter arrived at the George Heliport at 23:20 and the patient was transported by the PetroSA ambulance to the Life Bayview Hospital in Mossel Bay.
Mr Daantjie Botma, the Lead Occupational Health Practitioner for PetroSA accompanied the pilots on the S61 helicopter to the Orca to take care of the patient en route. At the time of going to press, the condition of the patient is unknown.
