Wet weather can be expected in the east of the country and would probably persist until Sunday at least, the SA Weather Services said on Friday morning.
"There is a good chance of rainfall in Gauteng and eastern parts of the North West, and similar patterns are forecast for KwaZulu-Natal, eastern Free State, Mpumalanga and Limpopo," senior forecaster Puseletso Mofokeng said.
Heavy downpours were expected for Gauteng on Friday, with a brief respite around noon.
There would be a reprieve from the sodden conditions on Sunday in the central and eastern provinces, when only isolated showers were expected.
The rain was caused by a cut-off low system in the south of the country being met with a high pressure system in the east, which brought moisture from the Indian Ocean -- resulting in clouds and precipitation.
