Workers injured in Springs factory explosion

Six factory workers were injured, one man critically, in an explosion at a factory in Springs last night.

The cause of the incident and the series of events leading up to it remain unclear and will form the subject of an internal and department of labour investigation.

Common cause information indicates that a pressurised container exploded near where the men were working. The explosion sent a fragment of the container flying through the air, striking one of the workers in the face.

Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the man in a critical condition, having sustained severe facial trauma, inhalation burns and second degree burns to his back. The other men had sustained minor burn wounds.

All were treated and stabilised at the scene by medics and transported by ambulance to a nearby private medical facility for further urgent care.
