Johannesburg - Limpopo disaster management officials were out in large numbers on Wednesday to help people affected by flooding in areas around the province.

"Preliminary reports show that about 100 households in Mamehlabe, Rosenkrantz and the Pinikie Sebotse villages in Matlala... were affected by yesterday's [Tuesday's] thunderstorms," the provincial co-operative government department said.

Some the houses were completely destroyed and roofs had been blown off, it said in a statement.

While the extent of the damage was still being determined, aid was being given to affected families in the form of blankets, temporary tents and food parcels.

Alongside local and provincial government structures, Eskom was on site to restore electricity to the affected villages. This was in conjunction with police, who were cordoning off areas where electrical wires were exposed.

The department said parts of Limpopo were likely to experience above-average rains and storms during the coming summer months.
