SA’s climate change strategy criticised

Oxfam on Tuesday said South Africa's strategy to deal with the effects of climate change had not sufficiently consulted those who will be hardest hit.

On Tuesday, the organisation made a presentation to Parliament on the country's climate change white paper.

Government released the document in October.

The group said authorities have not done enough to support meaningful consultation with women in rural communities.

It said the paper could alienate, rather than promote engagement on the issue.

Oxfam’s Rashmi Mistry said the paper was only open for public response for eight working days.

She said the policy needs to pay careful attention to vulnerable women, as they are responsible for most food production in rural communities.
