Man run down by train; fights for life

A man was critically injured when he was run down by a train at a station in Germiston on Friday night.

The cause of the incident and the series of events leading up to it remain unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.

Common cause information indicates that the man had been stepping off a moving train onto the platform when part of his trousers was caught on the coach. He fell onto the tracks beneath the carriage, which then passed over his legs.

Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the man in a critical condition, having sustained partial amputations of both legs. Medics worked fervently to stabilise him, rushing him by ambulance to the Tambo Memorial Hospital for further specialist care.

The man remains in a critical condition.
