Floods cost homeowners

Many KwaZulu-Natal residents have been left mopping up after flash floods left a wake of destruction across the province last night.

Brian Martin, the Ombudsman for short-term insurance, says homeowners affected by heavy rain and strong winds need to act quickly and report damages to their insurance companies - as many require claims to be made within a specified period.

Martin says most policies will provide cover against damage caused by storms, flooding and fallen trees.

The most important thing for people to do is that if any kind of loss and damage has been suffered, seek professional advice, consult your broker, consult an attorney, get advice and guidance and of course notify the insurer immediately," said Martin.
