400 people left homeless

Weekend shack fires left nearly 400 people homeless in the Cape Peninsula.

On Saturday, there were at least five fires in Nyanga, Wesbank and Parkwood.

But the most devastating was in Langa, where more than 300 people lost their homes when 93 shacks were destroyed.

On Sunday, five corrugated structures also burnt down in Khayelitsha.

Cape Town disaster services' Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said they were glad that there were no fatalities.

“No injuries were sustained in the recent fires over this weekend, and the cause of the fire is not yet known,” he added.
