Why was there no warning issued for severe weather in Gauteng?

The SAWDIS received the following email from a member of the public:

"I have noticed that you published the following warnings of severe weather:

SA National Severe Weather Warning: 2 October 2011 16h00 SAST

Why did you not publish any warning for the Gauteng area? We had a tornado in Gauteng and yet no warning was issued."

SAWDIS: Many thanks for your email. I deem it necessary to bring the following under your and our readers attention.

The SA National Severe Weather Warnings are issued daily by the South African Weather Service and not by the SA Weather and Disaster Information Service. There was indeed no warnings or weather watches issued for Gauteng yesterday afternoon as can be seen in the image below and via the above link.

  • Current warning: Gauteng, Northern Cape and Western Cape
  • Updated: 02/10/2011 13:18:07
  • No warnings nor advisories in effect
  • Subject: No Alerts
  • Detail: No Alerts

The SAWDIS noticed this earlier in the afternoon and kept a close eye on the weather in Gauteng after being alerted by several SAWDIS observers via Twitter. The SAWDIS did indeed warn the public of  approaching storms via Twitter.

Here are some of the Tweets:

As can be seen the SAWDIS was on the ball thanks to all the observers who send in reports to the SAWDIS. I highlighted some of the important tweets issued by the SAWDIS.  It really serves no purpose blaming anybody for not issue warnings of severe weather.  Rather provide the SAWDIS with your weather observations reports and images of approaching severe weather.

Do not assume that the SAWDIS knows for certain that severe weather are approaching or occurred in your area.  The SAWDIS want to hear from you. Two wake up calls? Two tornadoes in one day? We need to be vigilant and we need to keep an eye on the weather in South Africa. Every year people are killed or seriously injured by severe weather. We need to warn people of impeding severe weather.

Thanks to all observers  who kept the SAWDIS and our readers informed of the latest severe weather. The SAWDIS use Twitter  to warn people of approaching severe weather in South Africa.

The SAWDIS  would like to warn all communities to remain on full alert this storm season.  The SAWDIS will once again bring you the latest updates as  we receive reports and images.

The SAWDIS hereby ask the general public and SAWDIS Observers to forward any reports of severe weather conditions to the SAWDIS. Use your cellphone, digital camera, email and private weather station etc. in gathering and forwarding information, photos and data to the SAWDIS.
