Weeklikse Hamnet verslag 10 Oktober 2011 / Weekly Report 10 October 2011

Hamnet sal teenwoordig wees.

Weekly Hamnet Report  10 October 2011

Last week’s issue had hardly been posted when we heard that two tornado’s had caused a tremendous amount of damage in both Ficksburg in the Eastern Free State as well as on the East Rand near Nigel. A video of the Duduza ‘twister’ is available on ‘You Tube’!

Hamnet Gauteng South sent out an appeal for blankets and other means of support for the residents who had lost their belongings in the Duduza settlement. The question now arises; are we in for a rough summer with rain, tornados and possibly flooding over the next few months?

The data being received when an incident is reported on from the Global Disaster Alert is proving to be very useful in alerting us to problems around the globe! In the Far East! On Monday the 3rd we had 3 alerts on flooding in Cambodia, China and the Philippines.

The reports are very detailed and informative and one can immediately establish the severity of the situation! We will continue to check when reports are sent to us and if we need to establish any alternative contacts.

We still have a few tropical storms making their presence felt; Hurricane Phillippe is still in the North Atlantic, tropical storms Irwin and Jova are both located the Eastern Pacific off the coast of North America and in the Indian Ocean there is a bit of a depression developing off the East African coast and south of India.

In South Africa, the Hamnet Gauteng South contingent lent a helping hand on Monday to assist the Red Cross in preparing food for hundreds of people left homeless after the tornado that struck Duduza on Monday.

Also a reminder that JOTA will be on air next Saturday afternoon from 2pm to 8pm and the theme this year is Emergency Communication. Internationally, all Scout groups will be sending receiving messages as an exercise to show them the value of amateur radio in emergencies. Please consider coming on air on Saturday afternoon and participating as a Hamnet member.

South African Search & Rescue have sent out an invitation for a Sub Committee meeting to be held on Thursday the 20th of October. Hamnet will be attending.

Reporting for Hamnet, this is Francois Botha – ZS6BUU.
