Severe Thunderstorms expected for the 18 and 19 October 2011

Predictions models indicate the possibility of severe thunderstorms for the next two days.  The possibility of large hail and strong wind cannot be excluded.  The possibility of tornadoes over parts of South Africa cannot be ruled out. Unfortunately tornadoes cannot be predicted with certainty.

Note: All thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people each year than tornadoes in South Africa. Heavy rain from thunderstorms can lead to flash flooding. Strong winds, hail, and tornadoes are also dangers associated with some thunderstorms.

The SAWDIS is urging the public to take extra care as several severe weather watches has today been issued by the SA Weather Service.
