Johannesburg heatwave claims new record

The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens on Monday recorded the highest temperature on record for October.

Temperatures in Gauteng are expected to reach 36 degrees Celsius as the province experiences its first heatwave.

Medics have warned the public to protect themselves from heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Residents have also been urged to keep hydrated and stay in the shade where possible.

Environmental correspondent Simon Gear said, “According to the South African Weather Service’s website, the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens weather station has reached 33.4 degrees Celsius.”

The previous record temperature was 33.1 degrees back in 2006.
