Girl (7) drowns in Bloemfontein swimming pool

A seven-year-old girl drowned in a residential swimming pool in Bloemfontein yesterday.

The cause of the incident and the series of events leading up to it remain unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force inquest investigation.

Common cause information suggests that the girl had been playing near the pool when she fell into the water. She was immersed for an unknown period of time before members of her family discovered her and managed to pull her out.

Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that her relatives had initiated CPR. Medics immediately took over the care of the child, an advanced life support paramedic intubating her and placing her on a manual ventilator.

Medics attempted to revive the child for over half an hour before she was sadly declared dead.
