Cut-Off Low - Western Cape / Thunderstorms Interior (18 - 20 October 2011)

A cut-off low is still south-west of the country and could bring moderate to heavy rain to parts of the Southern- and Western Cape coastal areas by tomorrow. This mornings GFS models indicate that the highest rain might occur off-shore but there is a possibility for heavy rain along the West Coast, Overberg and Southern Cape coastal areas.   (See GFS image.) Due to the irregular nature of a cut-off low, the characteristics are generally very difficult to predict.  The SAWDIS request that there be continuous report back by real time observers and weather monitoring stations from the ground as how this weather system is progressing.

More on cut-off lows available HERE.

There is also a 60 - 80 % chance for severe thunderstorms over parts the interior.  See SA National Weather Warning.

All SAWDIS Weather Observers and even non SAWDIS weather observers are hereby requested to report heavy continues rain in their area of observation. Flash flooding is a possibility in areas. The SAWDIS is not sure where and if this heavy rain will occur. Be alert and send observations to the SAWDIS as we will in turn publish the observations to the benefit of the general public.
