Boy (12) attacked by dog, critically injured

A twelve-year-old boy is in a serious but stable condition in a Welkom Hospital after he was attacked by a Bull Terrier in Windsor Street in Virginia this afternoon.

The cause of the incident and the series of events leading up to it remain unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.

Common cause information, supplied by witnesses to the incident, indicates that the schoolboy had been walking along the road when he was attacked by the dog. His screams alerted those living on the street, who rushed to his aid. A man managed to chase the dog from the boy and a woman rushed him to the safety of her garden where she began treating his wounds.

Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the boy in a critical condition, having sustained severe head trauma from multiple bites. Medics immediately initiated care, stabilising the child at the roadside and transporting him by ambulance to a hospital in Welkom for further medical attention.

No one else was injured in the incident.
