Ninety people have died in fires in Cape Town since January, almost double the number from the same period last year, according to a report on Tuesday.

Cape Town Fire and Rescue's Theo Layne told the Cape Argus newspaper that 67 of those deaths were in informal settlements and 23 in formal housing.

Last month alone, 29 people died in fires around Cape Town.

Since June, 17 children have died in fires.

Cape Town's disaster risk management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said 49 people died in fires between January and the end of August last year.

The latest fire happened in Kuils River informal settlement at the weekend, when three people, including a pregnant woman, died and 200 were left homeless.
