Ship recovery effort continues

That is despite two days of failed attempts at removing the ship that ran aground at Sheffield Beach on the North Coast more than a week ago.

Saroor Ali, from the South African Maritime Safety Authority, says there is no major damage to the hull so they should be able to get her back out to sea.

He says the bulk tanker moved slightly yesterday, but the chain being used to pull it broke. Ali says they will make another attempt today.

If they aren't successful today, they might have to put off the operation until the end of the month when there is another spring tide.

"The spring tide is a high tide, so there is more water so it makes the vessel more buoyant, and if there is swell it also assists in the pulling out of the vessel," he said.
