Joe Slovo residents rebuild after devastating fire

Residents from the Joe Slovo informal settlement on Gauteng’s West Rand are slowly trying to rebuilding their homes after a fire gutted the settlement on Friday evening.

Some 800 people were left homeless. Authorities believe the fire was caused by illegal electricity connections.

Residents said despite the supply of relief packs this weekend, a large number of people are still without blankets and material to rebuild their shacks.

Community leaders are now in the process of compiling a list for the Home Affairs Department to help locals reapply for identity documents.

One elderly woman told Eyewitness News that she will not receive her pension because her ID was lost in the fire.
