Investigation into deadly Cape Town shack fire

Western Cape police said an inquest docket has been opened following a deadly shack fire in Khayelitsha on Wednesday.

A one-year-old boy burned to death when six shacks caught alight.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Last week, city officials and the Paraffin Safety Association of Southern Africa held a fire safety campaign in the township.

Unattended stoves were cited as one of the attributes to the problem.

The police's November Filander said the child was asleep when the fire started.

“At this stage we have opened an inquest docket into the fire as well as the death of the baby,” he said
