HAMNET News: 14 August 2011

The IARU/GAREC conference at Sun City started yesterday – Saturday – morning and GAREC will commence on Tuesday the 16th of August.

The welcoming of delegates started in earnest on Thursday morning from about 5am onwards when the first of the delegates started arriving from various countries from within the Region 1.

Francois, ZS6BUU, was available at the O R Tambo Airport to direct the various delegates to a demarcated area within the mezzanine or cafeteria level where they could make themselves comfortable until such time as the first of the organised means of transport was available to get them to Sun City.

Things turned out fairly organised on Thursday as all the delegates who had arrived, were sent off around 1pm in their allocated Quantums for Sun City.

On Friday, things did not run quite according to plan as there was one passenger who missed a flight due to circumstances beyond his control – namely a cancelled flight and there was a 4 hour delay in the flight from Washington/New York.

After some planning and discussion with the company ensuring delegates all get to Sun City on time, an alternative arrangement was finalised and I was able to get home at around 7pm on Friday evening – totally exhausted.

O R Tambo Airport, since the rebuilding received some very favourable comments from ex-pats who arrived subsequent to all the renovations! The pre-paid parking facilities worked like a charm and all in all the delegates were comfortable before they left for Sun City.

One more stint awaits me on Monday morning to welcome the last of the GAREC attendees but then it’s down to 3 days of conference, discussions and decisions.

Listen out for us on HF as there is a fully operational station on air from Sun City and in the area we are also on VHF on 145.050/650!

Reporting on Hamnet and GAREC – this is Francois Botha – ZS6BUU.
