15 Killed in Knysna Bus Crash

A tragic incident has occurred this morning on the Rheenendal Rd outside Knysna.

The cause of the incident is still unknown, but a large bus filled with school children all aged between 7 and 16 had allegedly lost control before leaving the road and entering a deep river.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they noted that only the rear of the bus was visible above the water line. Paramedics immediately dispatched extra resources to the scene as it was evident that the incident was serious.

Paramedics found 1 child that was not breathing and had no pulse. They immediately started with resuscitation efforts, but to no avail as the child was later declared dead at the scene.

A diving unit was called in from the local law enforcement authorities as more bodies were removed from the submerged bus. A total of 14 children have been declared dead at the scene as well as the 1 driver bringing the total deaths at the scene to a staggering 15.

A further 42 children were treated at the scene for injuries ranging from scrapes and bruises to suspected back and neck injuries before being transported to various hospitals in the surrounding area.

ER24 has made trauma counseling available to all individuals affected by this tragic incident. Local law enforcement authorities who attended the scene will be investigating the incident further.
