GENERAL

The Hamnet Bulletin is distributed once a month to all HAMNET members and is also available in text format as well as an audio clip on the SARL web site. News updates are read on the Amateur Radio Today Sunday transmissions and posted on the SARL web site. All Bulletin audio clips are also available as a Podcast.  Follow the links on the SARL web site.

HAMNET is a voluntary group of amateurs who make their unique communication skills available to assist and help others in distress during and after disasters.  HAMNET is represented on the sub-committee of the South African Search & Rescue Organisation. Training Modules are available either from your Provincial Director or from the National Director via e-mail and is also available on the SARL HAMNET Welcome CD.

HAMNET forms part of the Constitution of the South African Radio League which means that you have to be a member of the SARL to be a member of HAMNET.  All information on SARL HAMNET is available on the web site of the SARL at www.sarl.org.za   Just follow the links!

GAREC 2011 - ATTENDANCE COSTING

With The Global Amateur Radio Emergency Communication conference (GAREC) little more then 6 weeks away, accommodation bookings have now closed but for those who wish to attend on a daily basis, either the IARU or the GAREC meetings, the daily registration costs are given below.

To book, please make direct contact with me so I can let you have the Registration form for all the tea/coffee and meals during the day you are attending.

The registration fee for the full 3 days is R2600.  The Game Drive and 'braai' is R750 and if you require a T-shirt memento, the cost is R200.

The GAREC conference starts on Tuesday evening the 16th of August to allow for delegates attending the IARU conference to join us.  The Tuesday session will run from 7pm to 10pm or until we have completed the evening procedures.

Wednesday we start at 3pm thru 6pm or until proceedings have been completed.  The busy day is Thursday - starting at 8am through 2pm when we close and join the IARU delegates for the game drive and the 'braai'.

On Friday, all delegates who have flight arrangements or other plans will depart the complex from about 11am.

The Agenda is available on www.iaru2011.org.za for download and perusal.  It is not complete but will be amended as time goes on.

HAMNET DEDICATED WEB SITE

Over the past few years Mike Lauterbach, ZS5ML, had registered the domain www.hamnet.org.za on the Internet and has maintained the yearly domain payments.

This was brought to my attention and it was suggested that since the 'Facebook' site is such a success, we should consider allocating the website to a webmaster.

We did have a few offers but eventually it was decided that Glynn Chamberlain, ZS6GLN, will handle to running of the site from now on.  What has also happened is that although we do not as yet have a Twitter site, this is another avenue we could explore.

But let's leave that for later.  Twitter is an excellent immediate way of rapid communication in this modern world where everything has already happed because things change so fast!

Glynn will keep us informed as to when we could look at the launch and what I would like to suggest is that the various Provincial Director or their PIO's also contribute to make the site more meaningful to all.

We obviously will create links from either the Hamnet site to the SARL official site and visa versa.  This will also mean a greater way of communicating and exchanging ideas and expanding our communication channels!

GENERAL

Hamnet travels to KZN this month with a HAMNET road Show presentation in Durban on the 23rd of July.

The RTA will be a week later on the 30th and Hamnet will also be there.

We are renegotiating a revised date for Bloemfontein as I had to withdraw at the last minute due to a flu attack!

Membership is currently at 299 - just one short of the 300 mark and the nice thing is that 71% are all members of the SARL as well.  Well done!  This is gratifying as the SARL is the body that represents all our interest at ICASA, the IARU as well as the ITU.

MEMBER INFORMATION -  FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES!

Hamnet emergency communication frequencies are:-
80m band - 3,760MHz, 40m band, 7,110MHz. The 20m band - 14,300MHz.

One other suggestion that was made is that we list at the end of every Bulletin, important telephone and cell phone numbers that you should have at your fingertips should you come across or be involved in handling traffic on air.

Should there be numbers you wish to add - even for your Province (we can break the listing into Provinces), please let me know so I can add them.
