Pictures: Barge "Margaret" that stranded near Jacobsbaai on the 24 June 2009

Rob Parkinson writes: On the 24th of June 2009 the Barge "Margaret" with its load of 12 river barges floated ashore at Jacobsbaai after breaking its tow from the Tug "Salvaliant" The Margaret put Jacobsbaai on the map bringing hordes of curious onlookers to our little village.

The local Hotel / Restaurant flourished while residents cringed. Traffic inceased, the dunes were trampled, a few tempers flared, rumors abounded, and salvage attempts started, stopped, then started again.
Eventually the wreck was exploded, 6 barges were saved and the rest left to rust away.

The mighty Atlantic has taken its vengence out on the leftovers, rusting it relentlessly away and pounding it with regular high seas. The second photo above is now all that's left.

SAWDIS: Rob thank you very much for all the images and updates since 2009.  This is highly appreciated.  I wonder if this will also be the fate of the Phoenix, a derelict bulk tanker that ran aground off the coast of Kwazulu Natal yesterday morning?  Well we will soon find out.
