Firefighters douse East Rand blazes

Johannesburg - Two fires broke out in Ekurhuleni early on Tuesday morning, Ekurhuleni emergency services said.

Spokesperson Rogers Mamaila said emergency services received calls about a fire in Springs and one in Brakpan around 03:00.

In Springs, a warehouse storing Mondi paper caught fire. The blaze in the large warehouse was brought under control but not yet fully extinguished.

The doors to the building were locked and firefighters had to break six of them in order to enter. They managed to save 98% of the building and around 80% of the stock it contained.

In Brakpan a factory producing grease caught fire. The blaze in the considerably smaller building was brought under control around 07:00.

No injuries were reported.

A team of investigators were on the scene of both the fires to determine their causes.

"We don't suspect foul play but we do not rule out arson until the outcome of the investigations," Mamaila said.

He said it was not the first time fires were reported at roughly the same time.
