Delays expected on Ekurhuleni emergency line

The answering of telephone calls made to the Ekurhuleni municipality's emergency call centre will be delayed on Wednesday because a damaged underground Telkom cable is being replaced, says the municipality.

"Unfortunately, the affected telephone cable links into the Ekurhuleni emergency call taking centre," municipality spokesman Zweli Dlamini said in a statement.

"We have arranged for all emergency calls to be automatically re-routed to our alternate site for the taking of emergency calls."

Anyone calling the emergency number, 011-458-911, would have to wait "a bit longer" to have their calls answered because of the re-routing, he said.

The 086-054-3000 number would not be affected.

The re-routing started at 5AM and was expected to last about 12 hours, said Dlamini.
