Army deployed to assist vehicles stuck in snow

The army was deployed to Van Reenen's Pass in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday afternoon following heavy snowfalls in the area.

Rain and snow wreaked havoc in parts of South Africa, closing roads and preventing trains from operating.

A national joint operations committee has been set up to deal with problems on the country's transport networks.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation's Ashraf Ismail said, “We have spoken to the South African National Defence Force; they are sending Casspirs up on Van Reenen’s Pass to make sure that people there are being provided with supplies.”

Unusual weather patterns also forced authorities to close the N3 highway between Johannesburg and Durban. Snow was also reported in Lesotho, the Drakensberg, southern Free State, Mpumalanga as well as the Western and Eastern Cape.
